Songs Fit for a Monday

The Bending – Hopesfall

I’m listening to some oldschool Hopesfall right now. These guys were my favorite band up until they turned horrible. This song reminds me of warm, spring days, driving my 1998 white Ford Escort to college, blaring the music as loud as my speakers could handle it. And all of the awkward looks I got on campus as I slammed my hands on the steering wheel to the beat of the double bass.

Lady Gag-me

You would think that with how outlandish (see: ridiculous) Lady Gaga is with her fashion sense, her music would be a little more edgy and daring. Instead she sounds exactly like every other no-name talentless hack out there in the pop world. I heard a new song of hers, Alejandro, on Pandora this morning, and it was so boring and monotonous. It sounded like complete garbage. No, wait, it sounded exactly like Ace of Base actually.

22nd Street = Abbey Road NYC

I saw this over on 22nd street, between Fifth Ave & Broadway.

YouTube Covers

Is it strange that I love to sit around some days, and listen to amature cover songs for hours? The kind of poor quality covers where someone sits in front of the camera playing their acoustic and singing. I like to see raw talent. It’s awesome.

Battle of the Ad Bands

McCann Erickson’s More F*cking Cowbell won the second year in a row at Advertising Week’s Battle of The Ad Bands Competition. I am so jealous. I think an agency should hire me just to be part of their battle of the bands competition next year. I may have sold my Marshall half stack for rent money three years ago, but I haven’t sold my desire to rock out on stage in front of a crowd, without being taken too seriously. Give me a few shots of whiskey before going up there, and I promise to be more entertaining than anyone in this Van Halen cover.

RIP, Les Paul. You made some damn fine guitars in your day.

WOW. That’s all I can say about the concert last night! It was the most amazing show I’ve ever seen in my entire life, and I’ve been to a LOT of concerts! It’s amazing that he’s what, 66, 67 years old, and can still play a 2 and a half hour set of amazing music. He even played some tributes to George & John, and a little bit of Jimi Hendrix. There was a great mix of his stuff throughout his career, and plenty of The Beatles. After playing “A day in the life” he broke into “Give peace a chance,” and I got a good portion of that on video.

I definitely wasn’t front row, but I got a few good pictures and videos from the night.

For videos check out my YouTube Channel.
For pictures check out my Flickr.

The two videos for “Live and Let Die” involve lots of fireworks, so you should probably watch that…!

Great show though. I was thoroughly entertained for the entire time. And usually after about an hour and some odd minutes, I’m ready to leave. Not last night though. I could have sat there all night listening to him play. And he sounds just as good as ever.

John Lennon: The New York Years

john-lennon-ny-t-shirt

Over the weekend, I finally made it to the John Lennon exhibit at the Rock Annex down in SoHo. Since I had seen the general museum exhibit back in April, I was super antsy to skip all the way to the Lennon exhibit in the last room. But the people I went with were Rock Annex virgins, so I had to take it slow. I thought the overall exhibit setup was very fitting for Lennon: all white and peaceful. Think, the “Imagine” video. However, I feel like I had already seen so much of this stuff in the videos and documentaries that I’ve seen on him. I guess I didn’t learn much. But it was neat though to see the paper trail of legal notices when the government was trying to kick him out of the USA. I don’t want to give away the exhibit, but it was neat to see some of his most recognized clothing on display as well. Yoko even included the brown paper bag from the NYPD, full of John’s blood soaked clothes from the night of his murder. You could see little blood stains soaking through the masking tape on the bag. Kind of eerie. There was a huge petition on the wall to sign against gun laws in the United States, to be sent to President Obama upon the closing of the exhibit. There were several handwritten lyrics, and videos playing on the walls about Lennon, as well as a piano that he used on most of Milk & Honey if I’m not mistaken.

I’m not sure how long the exhibit runs, but I’m pretty sure it’s at least through the end of the summer. Tickets are around $26 or something, but if you have a student ID you can get them for $19. There’s several websites out there including Goldstar that offer special viewing times for super low prices. I’m talking around $10 low. Also, if you’re not a fan of Yoko, I don’t suggest that you visit the exhibit. Since the exhibit is titled John Lennon: The New York Years, much of the memorabilia focuses on his time in New York, with Yoko.

DETROIT

Okay one more post before heading out for the day. Eminem recently released his video for Beautiful. Occasionally I’ll still listen to Eminem, but this video makes me sad. I love Detroit. I guess it’s the midwestern girl in me, growing up in a family of automakers who are all feeling the effects of the recent bankruptcies. Not to mention I spent most of my teenage years in Detroit at St. Andrews, The Shelter and Cobo Arena for hundreds of concerts. It’s sad to go to Detroit and see all the empty buildings and boarded up houses, and everyone leaving the city. The footage of them tearing down the old Tigers Stadium is sad, granted, Comerica is pretty slick. I just hope Detroit can turn around and not become a lost city that dies with the times.

The only bad part about the show tonight. The soaked mud seeped right through the fake grass carpeting.
