Art. Advertising. Alcoholics.

One of my favorite things about this city are the random sightings of the gigantic paintings & ads that adorn the sides of buildings. Spotted this blatantly obvious one last night walking to the 6 train on Spring Street.

Hello, From iPhone 4

First post from the new iPhone! So far, I love it! Despite the fact that I still, to this day, two years later, HATE not having a physical keyboard. But Apple really has a dominant hold on me. It’s like once I have an Apple product, nothing else could come close to replacing it. So I guess I’m stuck for life- or at least until someone else comes out with something even cooler!

Anyway, LOVING it! It’s so much faster, and I don’t have apps crashing every 3 minutes! I think I’m going to be a lot more productive! This will be great for my new project I’m working on; especially the ability to shoot in low light and HD video!

Sexy Photos From the Booze Cruise

BoozeCruise

As promised, here’s a few photos I took while boozin’ & cruisin’ out on the Hudson & East Rivers on Saturday night. Yes, I like buildings and bridges more than I like people.

Victoria’s Secret Knows What’s Up

81010

Why yes, Victoria’s Secret, it will be incredible! You know why? BECAUSE IT’S MY BIRTHDAY!

I think fate drove me to take a lunchtime walk down past Victoria’s Secret in Herald Square today. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have known that the entire world is excited for my birthday (even though they should be; obviously)!

Just Another Weekend in NYC

Target

Is the heat wave finally behind us? It’s only 84 today, and really, quite nice in the shade. And it’s only supposed to be around 80 this weekend. Perfect! I’m still in shock that July 2010 is almost over though. It still seems like just a few years ago I was ringing in 2000, anxiously waiting for the entire world to go dark at the stroke of midnight. But here we are, ten years later, and more connected than ever.

Friday night I saw Inception. Wow. What a great movie, really. Saturday I went on a booze cruise on the Hudson River. Despite getting off to a late start (over an hour to be exact), paying $12 per mixed drink, $8 per warm beer, and sweating every ounce of liquid out of my body, I managed to have a blast. It was kind of a bummer that the boat was almost entirely closed in except for a few windows scattered here and there. But as we departed from Pier 40 (Hudson and West Side Highway), the tourist in me went crazy and started snapping photos of the Manhattan skyline as it disappeared in the distance. We made our way from the west side to the Statue of Liberty, then eventually up the East River. After the cruise, a group of us went to a bar over near SVA. It brought back a lot of memories from my first year in NYC, living on 23rd and 3rd. Especially the fact that I ended the night at Lyric Diner.

Sunday, the new Target opened up in Harlem. It’s on 116th and FDR b asically, so only about a mile from my apartment. I walked up there and braved the crowds, and ended up spedning $60 on clothing when I definitely shouldn’t have. I went all the way up there though; I couldn’t leave empty handed! The store was great. They even have collections that are exclusive to that location, inspired by the local culture of Harlem. In all honesty, I can’t wait until I actually need something to go up there!

That sums up my lovely weekend in the city of New York. I’m busy working on a few side projects, so blogging has been very slow lately (as you can tell). I’m looking forward to a very productive, yet relaxing week or two, before my mom arrives to help me celebrate my 25th birthday! I’m hoping to save up some money ($1200) to sign up for four continuing education classes at NYU this fall, but with the need for a new laptop, a looming credit card bill, and three student loans, I don’t see that in the near future. Ugh, speaking of fall, who’s ready for fall weather (and fashion)? Because I totally am.

Overrated or Not; Some Things I Can’t Turn Down

Magnolia Cupcake

Just as I was vocalizing my craving for something sweet, in comes a batch of Magnolia cupcakes! Thanks to Steve McCarron for being born on this date, and his lovely wife for bringing us all a delightful afternoon treat!

I Want to Buy my Glasses Here

Glasses

Passed this door of an Upper East Side optician on Thursday. I forget the name of the place (maybe Leonard’s? Anybody know?) but I do remember that it was in the 70’s, on Third Avenue. Clever!

“A Million Forms of Identification, Please.”

*I wrote this yesterday, but of course, my awesome first generation iPhone would only save it as a draft.

I’m sitting at the DMV in Herald Square, waiting to finish some paperwork (or something) for my very first New York State drivers license! Finally! I’ve only been living here for 4 years…

I Think It’s Time to Move…

So perhaps I was being a bit paranoid. Or maybe I was just in need of seeing some pretty faces. I jumped the gun a little bit tonight and called up the FDNY, when it wasn’t entirely necessary.

I was sitting in my bedroom on the computer, trying to fix the internet problems I’ve been having. My room is entirely closed up because the AC is on. On one side of the bedroom is the door to the living room (aka the only fire escape route- the main stairway, roof, and fire escape exits are ALL through that door), and on the opposite side of the bedroom is the bathroom. There’s a window in the bathroom, but it just leads to a small, diamond shaped space between my building and the one next door- 8ft away. Since my bedroom is in the back of the apartment, I’m always terrified that I’m going to not hear all of the commotion of the firemen out front, and get trapped in the back of my apartment as it burns to the ground. There’s really no way out through the bathroom window.

So anyway, I’m sitting there and I heard this really strange noise— an alarm of some sort. It sounded electronic, almost like an alarm clock, so I ignored it. About five minutes later I noticed it was still going off, so I opened the door to the bathroom and instantly smelled smoke. I stuck my head out the window to get a better whiff, and sure enough, a stronger smell of smoke and a much louder alarm. After freaking out for a brief minute, I grabbed my phone and keys, and ran down the stairs to the main floor. A couple of neighbors came out too and asked if everything was okay. They heard the alarm and smelled smoke as well. We got out in front of the building where I proceeded to call 911, while simultaneously trying to hold back the nerve-vomit that I felt was about to exit my stomach. After placing the call, I hung up and started talking to the neighbor sitting on his stoop in the next building over. I asked him if he smelled smoke, and he said “yeah that was us. Trying to cook sausage and failed. I didn’t feel like dealing with that alarm so I came outside.”

I don’t know who should’ve felt more stupid; me for calling the fire department over a sausage fire, or this jerk for leaving a smoldering kitchen and noisy alarm to go sit on the porch and read a magazine. He kind of looked at me like I was a retard though when I told him I called the fire department…

So then I hear sirens blaring, as they come barreling down 2nd avenue, and crowds gather on the streets. As soon as they jumped out, I accidentally (of course), approached the three best looking guys and started telling them everything was okay. Then they directed me to their chief, who seemed less than enthused. Half of the crew went inside to check things out, while the other guys went to question the dude on the porch. He looked at me and shook his head at me again like I was retarded.

So maybe I acted a little prematurely, but when a smoke alarm is going off for five minutes and you smell smoke, your first thought is that there’s a fire in someone’s apartment, and they’re not home. I didn’t want people to die!

So sorry E95th street, for causing another fire scare. Maybe I should move…

Mac n Cheesy Day

MacNCheese

Oh, crappy first generation iPhone photo!* I passed this ad in the 40th Street/B’way Times Square subway entrance on my way home from work today. They must’ve known that I was heading home to smash on some mac n cheese myself. Except I wasn’t going for the blue box blues. I ordered a single-serve dish of gourmet mac n cheese, baked with a layer of gruyère cheese and bread crumbs on top from Fresh Direct. It was pretty good, but not as good as some of the restaurants I’ve been ordering from lately!

*Since last Tuesday, my laptop, desktop, iPhone and iPod have all broken. Apple conspiracy theory? I think so! I’m using an old first generation iPhone until my iPhone 4 comes in next week. My 3G will no longer turn on at all. The headset jack on the first gen. is of course, broken, so I don’t have any music for the commute to and from work. My keyboard on my laptop only works if you type a bunch, and then click the screen— then it appears. The trackpad also thinks that it’s constantly pressed down, so it clicks and drags and highlights EVERYTHING with every move. My desktop works for the most part, but the internet doesn’t work for more than 1 minute at a time. I have to keep disconnecting and reconnecting, even though I just bought a $100 external USB internet adapter. But if I buy a new laptop before September, I can get a free iPod! I’m still accepting donations, and my birthday is coming up! Ha!
